Welcome back to the Girl and the Gov® Diaries.
If you’re new here — hi, I’m Sammy – the blonde behind Girl and the Gov®. This little corner of the internet, or arm of GATG rather, is where I share what’s been crossing my desk and my DMs: the internet finds I can’t stop sending to friends, the things I added to cart, the side quests I found myself on, and convos with people doing genuinely interesting things. I’d hint at what you’ll find when you scroll, but that would ruin the fun ;)
Happy reading and happy to have you here <3

Things of amusement I’d send to a friend
It’s always funny when you find an offline, more analog tidbit online. And that’s what happened with my new obsession, the new-to-shelves, print publication, The Galconomist. The mag, which crossed my radar via a TikTok where its EIC was sharing the BTS of an article feat. in the latest issue is the perfect blend of culture meets fashion meets society type coverage, and gives Vanity Fair, Vogue, and The Cut all had a baby. Alas, for my NY readers, you can grab a copy at Casa Magazines.
Flagged under hacks I’ve learned via TikTok – seriously, I have a collection called “life hacks” – is this one, which illustrates a way to get the most squeeze out of a lemon without dealing with the seeds. It’s a game changer.
The level of wholesome that this video exudes is historic, and its contents are actually prehistoric because the duo in this video are the owners of the newly opened Dinosaur World In North Carolina. Roadtrip for the vibes anyone??
I’m a Northeast girly for life, but the one thing that crossed my desk that gave Minnesota some serious points in my book, is this pencil sharpening festival. Before you go “huh???” watch this video on it. The short story is this legendary tree had fallen down, people didn’t want it removed, the owners turned it into a mega pencil sculpture, and every year they host this big sharpening fest. Think: if a porchfest were about sharpening a pencil.
If you know where to look, you’ll find the coolest way to customize clothing, re-work an old piece, or just bring something up from scratch. This creator [or the face behind activewear brand Wear Ones] has started a whole series on where to look and the places you’ll find in the city if you do, including this legendary spot that works with leather, studs, and grommets.
Apparently there’s such a thing as an “Obama Coffee,” or at least in the EV there is. These two creators bopped on over to the place serving them, showcased the ever-iconic sign, and had this review of it, which tbh, made me all of the more curious.

THE MYTH OF THE BIG TENT:
For as long as I can remember both political parties from time-to-time have expressed the need to expand their tents – to include more types of people, more variety in beliefs, and so on – largely with the goal of propelling themselves towards wins at the ballot box. It often gets boiled down verbally to having a ‘big tent’ party. But here’s the thing – and this goes for both parties – tents have entrances just as much as they have exits.
If you’ve ever been to an outdoor-indoor wedding with a tent you know this precisely. Guests flow in, guests flow out – sometimes from the main entrance, sometimes from the side; sometimes they flow in for dinner, sometimes they flow out to relieve a babysitter. The flow varies for a variety of individual person-to-person reasons. And it’s that same concept that applies to having a big tent in politics. When you open more doors, or expand the set of ideas made acceptable within tent boundaries, people aren’t just coming into the tent, they’re also leaving it.
For every person that enters the Democratic tent for someone like Graham Plattner, a guy with a Nazi tattoo emblazoned on his chest, you’re losing someone. For every person that enters the Republican tent for someone like Nick Fuentes and his groypers, you’re losing someone. There’s a reason more and more people are identifying as Independents, and part of that is because the attempts by both parties to expand their tents in unacceptable directions to desperately grab a finicky, yet loud part of the electorate has become a fixture not a bug.

Finds, things I’ve got my eye on, & generally cool sh*t worth a click
For an absolute sob story, the Chris Lake concert under the K Bridge that I had on the cal to go to was cancelled due to 30 minutes of severe weather… first-world complaints aside, the shorts I got for the concert i.e. these micro leather shorts have continued to be a winner. TBH, I’m literally wearing them right now, and have been loving pairing their grunge vibe with a top that’s more structured like this one.
If Old Navy has no fans than I’m… yea, anyways, these four things that they have on their shelves right now are not only cute, but they look more expensive than their price tag by a mile, including IRL – there are so many things that look nicer than they are because of their online edit, but I’ve seen ‘em all, and they make the cut. Especially on the both thumbs up list, is this dress, which is technically a cover-up. It’s one of my faves, and will work well into fall too.
Every time I walked by the Pixi On-the-Glow Blush Stick in the CVS minis aisle for a solid six to eight months, I vacillated between purchasing it or not. Finally, I made the big ol’ decision to buy it, and I’m so happy that I did. I can’t even begin to tell you how much of a difference a creme blush has made, but seriously major. The same goes for this incredibly affordable Milani creme bronzer. If your skin like mine is always dry as a chip, these two might just become your go-tos as they’ve become mine.
Listed under my current obsessions is this Kristen Ess scalp scrub. Why? It simply smells amazing and works beautifully.

QUESTS
Side quests, main quests, & generally fun sh*t to check out or do
At the intersection of MacDougal and Prince, on a screen plopped in front of Croft Alley [RIP Lola Taverna] the Knicks won [in five]. The energy leading up to it [feat. an ASAP Rocky sighting], during it, and the eruption of joy after [and still] is actually indescribable. I’m not sure what can create the same camaraderie, but I can tell you that my friends and I have decided that instead of saying we’re “pleading the fifth,” going forward, we’re going to be saying “Knicks in Five” instead.
Some trips never get out of the groupchat, and the same often goes for restaurants, bars, bakeries, activities, and other things that cross the feed that fall into the “we need to try this place” category. In this case, what got out of the GC, were a boatload of cookie places my friends and I had been meaning to try since forever. We turned it into a cookie tour, dubbed ourselves the “nibblers,” and crowned Petit Chou as the best of the choco chips thus far. All of the places we went [see caption] are near each other, and are a great starting point for a lil’ ‘tivity.
One of my favorite things to do is simply walk around different neighborhoods, bop into different places, and flag other spots to try at a later date. In the later date category, Greenburg Cafe in Greenpoint made its way into my side quests on work days purview. And while I can absolutely say their iced coconut americano was great, what made it a place I’ll return to is its backyard, which has kind of a beachy vibe to it [the way the light bounces around back there is kind of magical].
I’ve always loved an activity, and I think as we get older, the need to do activities with friends versus just dinners with friends is vital to keeping those friendships strong. Activities are ground zero for forming new memories, as opposed to the let's run it back to that same story from ten years ago for the millionth time sitch. With that in mind, the wheel pottery classes at Choplet in Williamsburg [and Greenpoint!] provide the perfect setting for new mem creation. One of my best friends and I went recently, and it was so much fun. We’re we bad at it? Yes! Was it still fun? Yes! Was the funniest part witnessing a dumpster fire of a 3rd or 4th date across from us? Oh ya!
